Where Did The Word "Waifu" Come From?

The widely accepted root of the word "Waifu" stems from the butchered Japanese pronunciation of the English word "Wife." The origins of this term in Japanese go back at least to the 1980s or 1990s. Since then, it has become a trendy term in otaku culture.

Anime fans started to use waifu to refer to a character they particularly liked, a character they considered unique to them. The first entry in the Urban Dictionary for this use of the word dates back to 2007.

It has also spread outside of anime fandom, so characters in video games or even live television shows can also be called waifu.

What is a Deredere?

The term Deredere (デ レ デ レ) could be roughly translated to lovey-dovey. Deredere Waifu represents an attractive, friendly, and funny person with a kind personality. She is usually filled with smiles, spreading joy and love to people around her but sometimes can have a dark, sad, or hateful side. It's a relatively common type of girl that is usually found in shoujo animes.

What is a Yandere?

The term yandere (ヤンデレ) is composed of two parts: yanderu (sick) and deredere. Yandere waifu refers to love crazy, obsessive girls who devote everything to her loved one in crazy ways. Their love is so passionate and fanatic that they could kill for the person they love. Yandere Waifu is usually the jealous type. In some cases, they would rather kill the one they love to be with him forever.

At first sight, a Yandere can seem calm and always smiling until something happens, causing them to flip and reveal their true nature. The highlight of a Yandere is how their psychotic devotion to another character makes them crazy and unstable.

What is a Tsundere?

The term tsundere (ツンデレ) is a combination of two words, tsuntsun (to turn away in disgust or anger) and deredere (to become affectionate). The tsundere is another common type of girl as it is presented in many animes. In general, the tsunderes are cold at the beginning or even hostile to the other character. It's sometimes hard to know what they think as yes means no, and no means yes for a Tsundere. They are proud girls and will never admit that they could be wrong.

It takes a lot of work for the protagonist to see her bright side most of the time. Over time, Tsunderes will show their warmer and friendlier side. Tsundere originally came from the Japanese Bishoujo Games. It is also part of the otaku moe phenomenon. It is spreading into maid cafes, manga, novels, anime, and even mass media.

What is a Kuudere?

The term "kuudere" (クーデレ) comes from the word "cold" and the word "derdere." The kuudere waifu is the kind of girl who doesn't show her emotions to others. They are often freezing and severe. They are not trusting people and keep a distance between them and others. However, they open up when they are in a relationship with someone and sometimes let their emotions run free.

This makes waifu characters in mangas exciting because she will reveal her feelings more and more as the story progresses. Metaphorically speaking, we could say that Kuudere waifus are like snow: it may be cold and harsh at first glance, but it keeps autumn's seeds warm and safe until spring.

What is a Dandere?

The term dandere (だんデレ) comes from the words "danmari" meaning "silence," and "dere," from "deredere" The dandere waifus are really quiet and calm to the point that they could look emotionless. 

The truth is they are just timid! However, if you push the right buttons, you can get them to pour their heart out to you, which is when you start realising that they can be talkative and cute.

A nyandere waifu is a very playful and affectionate girl. They have strange but cute habits of behaving like cats. They will often finish their sentences with a "Nya", which means "meow" in Japanese.

Some of them can even be real cats! Sometimes they could either transform themselves into cats or reveal that they are half-human, half-cat. Other times, they enjoy making people believe that they are one. Honestly, how do our hearts not melt seeing this?

Himedere

Himedere waifu usually think very highly of themselves. They believe that they are so unique and special. Furthermore, this type of girl wants to be treated like royalty even if they aren't. It comes as no surprise that they have a very high ego and pride.

They are usually quite bossy and have the habit of bossing people around to do things for her instead of doing things themselves. They will always put themselves first with the one they love. Himedere are driven by success and perfection.

Bifauxnen

Bifauxnen waifus are girls who dress and act like handsome boys. They can be easily confused for men. In plenty of anime, the bifauxnen are usually very popular with other girls.

Erona

This time, erona waifus are not "girls" but women between 30 and 40 years old. Contrary to other waifu we've covered so far, they are adults instead of high school girls. They are women with very attractive and developed assets. They are generally secondary characters. They can be nurses, teachers or secretaries. They are very popular with the male population of the anime.

Yuangire

The term "Yuangire" (ヤンギレ) is composed in the same way as "yandere" with "yanderu" (sick) and "kiku" 《効く, which means cut and break. We spoke about yandere waifu who are perfectly capable of killing for love, but Yuangire is not exactly the same thing. Unlike the Yandere, Yangires are not motivated by love at all.

They love to kill and torture people for their pleasure or because they are psychologically ill due to trauma. To top it all off, they very rarely regret their actions. At first glance, they seem calm and harmless but trust me, the last thing you want is to deal with them.

Unlike more traditional female characters in most anime, Zero Two is a very forward and aggressive woman. She's naughty, demanding, and loves challenging the rules. She's the type of waifu that acts like nothing would hurt her. However deep down, she can be quite fragile and is quite careful who she lets into her heart to protect herself from breaking. 

Megumin

Megumin is archwizard, who is part of the Crimson Demons race and one of the main characters of KonoSuba. She is a young girl with dark brown, shoulder length hair and crimson-colored eyes. As she has a delicate under-developed figure, Kazuma, the main character, describes her figure as a porcelain doll.

Megumin is incredibly straightforward, with almost no filter when she speaks. She is intelligent but has very little self-control, especially when it comes to her explosion magic. Megumin is not the typical girly anime character. She is stubborn, acts a little boyish at times, and gets incredibly shy and flustered when it comes to her feelings.

Hatsune Miku

Hatsune Miku is not an anime character, but the first Japanese Vocaloid developed and distributed by Crypton Future Media to accompany the eponymous text-to-speech program created by Yamaha.

As Miku has no canon personality to base on, her character relies entirely on the perspective of the song's producer or its listener. One may see her as kind, shy, and reserved. The other may see her as outgoing and playful.
