In 2022, a virtual reality massively multiplayer online role-playing game (VRMMORPG) named Sword Art Online (SAO) was launched. Using the NerveGear, a headset that stimulates the user's five senses via their brain, players can experience and control their characters in the game with their minds. The fun and the NerveGear were designed by Akihiko Kayaba. On November 6, 10 000 players logged into the SAO mainframe cyberspace for the first time, finding that they could not log out. Kayaba appears and tells the participants that they must beat the 100-story Aincrad, a steel castle that is the setting for SAO if they want to be free. Those who die in the game or forcibly remove the NerveGear from the tournament will die in real life.
The main character, Kirigaya "Kirito" Kazuto, was among the 1,000 testers in the game's previous closed beta. With the advantage of prior experience playing in VR and the desire to protect other beta testers from intolerance, he isolates himself from the large group. He plays the game alone, wearing the mantle of "fighter," "beta tester," and "cheater." As the players advance through the game, Kirito finally befriends a girl named Asuna Yuuki, with whom he forms a relationship that later evolves into a marriage. After realizing that Akihiko Kayaba was playing in the game as the leader of the guild that Asuna joined, they confronted him. They destroyed him, freeing themselves from the game with the other players.
